Potion Craft For Modern Witches and Magicians

The life of the modern witch or magician isn’t usually the lovely picturesque reels you see on Instagram and TikTok. Most of us don’t have the luxury of having an adorable cottage in the forest or a graveyard that doesn’t close at 8pm every night. Foraging for herbs and flowers at a city park is our reality while curious and often judgmental onlookers glance back and forth as we whisper to the spirit of the place and try our best to discreetly stuff our new plant friends in our pockets and bags.

Elaborate rituals are few and far between for the most part. They take a lot of planning in advance and take a fair amount of time to carry out. Depending on how complex you plan to make it, they can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Hell, I’ve done a working where just the setup, purification of myself, the room, the banishing, and the circle casting alone took an hour. ( The Lesser rituals of the Pentagram and Hexagram are no joke.) That’s not to say we don’t ever have time for these types of workings, it’s just that they are particularly uncommon if you work a full-time job and have a family, responsibilities, etc.

It can get overwhelming and really take the wind out from your sails. I personally have felt extreme burnout when trying to do “everything right”. Have you ever taken a look at the original Golden Dawn curriculum? That stuff is a lifelong commitment and daily practices are super time consuming.

Of course, there are all types of magickal people, each with their own traditions and tastes. I just happened to keep getting sucked into the ceremonial realm. However, we all need to take a step back every once in a while and truly find what works for us. What small acts of magick can we incorporate into our daily lives to keep that energy flowing and that connection to The Field ( as Aiden Wachter calls it ) alive and strong?

Simple can be profound. When we each first start out on our magickal path, we begin with little things. Because we’re already filled with excitement and wonder upon discovering this new world, these small little acts of magick greatly affect us as we begin to tap into the unseen realm around us.

So, are you a modern witch/magician who finds themself strapped for time and energy? Are you searching for some simple no-fuss magick to get you back into the groove and feeling powerful again? I have a classic solution for you; Tea Potions

You can get herbs and tea blends pretty much anywhere. And please, for the love of the gods, don’t get guilted into buying something expensive and “sustainable” that some artisan shop on social media is trying to sell you. I’m sure some will stick their noses up at this one. Hey, if you can afford those luxuries, go for it! But, sadly, a lot of us just can’t. Don’t feel bad. I certainly don’t, and you can’t make me. We all have different ways we can make a positive impact on the world. Do what you can when you can.

So, pick your tea/herbs. I’ll use mint as an example here. Mint is a very common and powerful plant spirit to incorporate into your potion. It’s an herb that has wonderful physical and metaphysical properties. It’s purifying and protective. It stimulates and strengthens clarity, intuition, and psychic abilities. Mint can assist in any dream work and can attract abundance and prosperity. In other words, it has a lot of versatility and hits pretty much every magickal nail on the head.

Hold your tea bag in your hands and intend to connect to the plant spirit inside. Speak out loud or silently your reason for connecting with it and making a potion from it. What are you looking to gain from the working? Thank it, then brew and steep the tea as directed.

From here, once it’s good to go, you can just go ahead and drink it mindfully and gratefully as you focus on your reason/intention. Pretty easy, right? If you want to take it a step further, you can raise personal energy ( run your hands together vigorously for about a minute to stimulate your own chi ) then cup your hands around your mug and give that energy to the potion. If you are attuned to reiki, give it that ( this is what I tend to do ).

If you have the time and the tools, you can also incorporate crystal and tarot correspondences to amplify what your intention is or to align with whatever phase the sun or moon is in. For this post, I wanted to stimulate creativity and clarity. The sun is in Gemini right now, so I put the Lovers and Magician tarot cards by my steeping tea along with a Citrine and Clear Quarts crystal.

Congratulations! You’ve just done some easy and powerful magick! Revel in your witchiness and go about your day knowing you’re magickal as hell. Don't let the hustle of our modern lives get in the way of your connection. Remember, simple can be just as effective and fun as elaborate.
